Scent work fun!
Join us this weekend for a live zoom to find out more about the fun sport of canine nosework. I’ll be showing you easy ways to start the game at home and you don’t need anything special to get started, just some treats or your dog’s favorite toy. For those returning from last year who have already started we can troubleshoot any issues you might be having. If you have an odor kit but have no idea how to get started have it handy and we will talk about imprinting target odors.
Why is Scent work so important for dogs?
The sense of smell is the first and generally most important sense to our dog’s world.
Deep scenting helps to lower a dog’s heart rate and helps them to decompress from stress.
Understanding how scent affects our dogs helps us to better understand why they might be distracted even when we don’t see anything.
It is a wonderful indoor activity for a dog, great for cold winter evenings and hot summers when you need to stay in due to the heat.
Builds confidence for anxious dogs.
Teaches a person how to read fine detailed canine body language.
It’s FUN.
Do I need to be interested in competing to attend the class?
Absolutely not! So many academy members have had a lot of fun learning just to have fun at home with their dogs. That being said, so many have gotten so into it that they are now unexpectedly competing and earning titles in scent work competitions! I have one student who is now an instructor and working to bring competitions to her country by organizing it herself, she started just having fun with her anxious reactive dog. Once she saw how much it helped her dog recover from reactivity she wanted to share it with her community.
Do I need to buy a lot of supplies to participate?
No! You can start with just hiding treats or a favorite toy. If you decide to stay with it you can purchase scent kits that have the target odors depending on what organization you decide you want to compete in if you decide to.
Can my older dog or my baby puppy participate?
Yes, all ages of dogs can do scent work! The dogs already know how to do this! The game is all about us learning how to use and understand the natural skill the dogs naturally have. Leo started scent work at 8 weeks old and I firmly believe that all our work on learning scent work games from the beginning is why he turned into a natural migraine alert dog.
